ABOUT THE STATE OF ENERGY IN SOUTH AFRICAN CITIES REPORT 2020

Cities are major drivers of energy demand in South Africa, influencing the country’s energy and emissions profile and socio-economic development of the country. Since the first State of Energy in South African Cities report in 2006, energy demand in cities has grown. Not only has growth been absolute, but Cities also represent a growing demand relative to the rest of the country. Sustainable energy development and climate response in cities are therefore critical to achieving a resource-efficient and low-carbon and equitable future for the country.

Since the first publication of the State of Energy in South African Cities reports in 2006,  the reports have been providing detailed progress of sustainable energy-related developments in all South African metropolitan and secondary cities.  This includes all data related to energy generation and consumption as well as the status of renewable energy and energy efficiency implementation. The fourth edition of the State of Energy in South African Cities 2020 examines the sustainable energy development path of 20 of the country’s energy-intensive cities. The 2020 report aims to provide a comprehensive energy data picture, demonstrate learnings, discuss the sustainable energy transition, complexities of energy poverty in cities and highlight disruptions that are rapidly arising in the urban energy sector. The report serves as an important tool to influence energy policy and governance relating to local level energy development.

You are warmly invited to attend this virtual launch event and in celebrating Sustainable Energy Africa’s 20 years of work towards supporting sustainable urban energy development in the country.
